Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and a pip mark or dot on the side must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston and pip mark towards the top of the piston.
Place the ring squarely into the piston groove taking care to keep it flat.

Starting with the oil rings install each ring on piston using the following orientation.

In this case the manufacturer s recommendation is to align the expander ring ends with the wrist pin hole in the piston.
Rotate the oil ring support rail until antirotational locking detent falls between the opening at intersection of ring groove and wrist pin hole.
The oil ring s main function is to control the amount of oil that makes it between the piston and bore which is necessary for lubrication and heat transfer purposes.
